AIntivirus: Token in Honor of John McAfee Divides Crypto Community
- Launch of AIntivirus token in honor of John McAfee.
- Crypto community divided between support and skepticism.
- Concerns about the distribution and legitimacy of the project.
The cryptocurrency community is divided following the launch of AIntivirus token, a memecoin created in honor of the late cybersecurity pioneer John McAfee. The initiative was announced by McAfee's widow, Janice Elizabeth McAfee, who said she took creative control of the project to honor her husband's legacy. She noted that the token reflect John's beliefs in technology, freedom and privacy, areas in which he has shown interest throughout his life.

The announcement was made via John McAfee's official X (formerly Twitter) account, which has over 1 million followers. The post read: "I'm back with AIntivirus. An AI version of de myself. You didn’t think I would miss this cycle, did you?” The message included a link to the project’s official website and the token contract address.
However, the reaction from the crypto community was mixed. Some members expressed enthusiasm for the honor, while others raised concerns about the legitimacy of the project. Analysis indicated that 90% of the total supply of 100 million tokens had already been distributed to hundreds of wallets before the official announcement, leaving only a small fraction available in trading pools. This distribution raised concerns about the transparency and fairness of the project.
Prominent figures in the crypto community have also weighed in. Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson quipped, “John being resurrected as a shady AI crypto scam is about as John McAfee as it gets.” Additionally, cryptocurrency analyst Adam Cochran expressed skepticism, suggesting that the project could be a scam.
In response to criticism, Janice McAfee defended the project, saying it was designed to honor her husband's vision of privacy, freedom and technology. She emphasized that since John's death, she has been looking for ways to celebrate the genius he was and build on the legacy he left behind.
AIntivirus’ official website describes the token as “the ultimate disruptor” in a world dominated by state surveillance, corporate greed, and digital slavery. The project references an AI incarnation of John McAfee, designed to defend digital freedom and continue his mission.
Despite the controversies, AIntivirus has achieved a significant market cap in a short period of time. Data indicates that the token has reached a market cap of approximately $33 million, with a total supply of almost 100 million tokens and around 13.956 holders.
The divide in the crypto community reflects the complexities of launching a token in honor of a figure as polarizing as John McAfee. While some see AIntivirus as a fitting celebration of his legacy, others warn of the possibility of exploitation and fraud.
