Aqua Wallet expands Latam features with $5M funding
Aqua Wallet, a Bitcoin-focused (CRYPTO:BTC) digital wallet developed by JAN3, is undergoing significant updates to enhance usability for Latin American users.
The changes follow a $5 million seed funding round in January 2025, which enabled the company to double its development team and accelerate feature integration.
CEO Samson Mow outlined the updates during The Bitcoin Podcast, emphasising a full interface redesign to streamline user experience.
“We’ve been working on a refactor of the whole UI to make it more beautiful and more streamlined,” he stated, noting the team’s accelerated pace since securing funding.
Key improvements include integrating regional payment systems like Brazil’s Pix, allowing users to settle invoices using Bitcoin or Liquid USDT balances.
Mow hinted at additional payment method integrations in the coming months, though specifics remain undisclosed.
The wallet’s upcoming Aqua Card, a prepaid Visa card linked to Bitcoin and Liquid USDT balances, remains in development.
Unlike traditional banking products, the card will operate without mandatory KYC checks, aligning with Aqua’s non-custodial ethos.
Mow framed these updates as critical for bridging Bitcoin with legacy financial systems in emerging markets.
“Our focus has always been on emerging markets. To give them the same bank experience as Venmo or PayPal,” he explained.
The overhaul reflects JAN3’s broader strategy to promote Bitcoin adoption through both institutional partnerships and retail solutions.
By addressing regional payment needs, Aqua aims to position itself as a versatile tool for savings and transactions in inflation-prone economies.
While the wallet’s Lightning and Liquid Network support already enables low-cost transactions, the Latam-focused updates underscore its evolving role in addressing financial inclusion challenges.
Mow acknowledged the ongoing relevance of traditional systems, stating, “It’s not gone yet,” and emphasising the need for interoperability.
Aqua’s development team continues refining these features, with further announcements expected as integrations progress.
The updates highlight the wallet’s adaptability as Bitcoin adoption grows in regions where digital payment infrastructure remains fragmented.
