Cosmos developers finalize the first IBC transaction with Ethereum testnet
Cosmos’s development team has successfully conducted the first Inter-Blockchain Communication transaction directly between Cosmos Hub and Ethereum.
On March 26, co-CEO of Cosmos ( ATOM ) Maghnus Mareneck announced that they have successfully conducted the first IBC transaction between Cosmos’s central blockchain, Cosmos Hub, and Ethereum ( ETH ). This test is part of the larger Eureka upgrade , scheduled for release as part of IBC-go v10 later this year.
Cosmos’s IBC protocol enables independent blockchains to communicate and transfer assets and data with each other. The protocol was activated in March 2021, after the development team had successfully finalized the Stargate upgrade . Since then, many blockchains within the Cosmos ecosystem, including Terra, Osmosis, and Akash, have integrated IBC, enabling asset transfers and communication between these chains.
Today’s test is noteworthy because it’s the first IBC connection directly between Cosmos Hub and Ethereum. However, it’s worth noting that previous efforts have already connected external blockchains to Cosmos through indirect routes. In April 2024, Picasso Network facilitated an IBC connection between Cosmos and Ethereum, and later between Cosmos and Solana . Earlier, Composable Finance bridged Polkadot and Kusama with Cosmos. Cosmos’s ultimate goal is to make IBC a universal standard for blockchain communication.
