European regulators are said to be looking into crypto exchange OKX’s trading and self-custody offerings after revelations that North Korea’s Lazarus Group laundered funds from the $1.5 billion Bybit hack through the platform. According to a Bloomberg report on Tuesday, which cited sources familiar with the matter, the issue was discussed at the European Securities and Markets Authority’s (ESMA) Digital Finance Standing Committee meeting on March 6. The meeting included regulators from all 27 EU member states as well as officials from the ESMA and the European Banking Authority (EBA). Regulators reportedly debated whether OKX’s permissionless tools violate the European Union’s Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulations. MiCA, which took full effect late last year, provides exceptions for decentralized applications, but some regulators suggested that OKX’s Web3 services should be covered by the rules. If found to be breaking the rules, OKX could face significant penalties, including losing its MiCA license, which it obtained in February. Crypto airdrops have generated huge profits, but just not for U.S. users. DragonFly’s new report reveals how US investors missed out on nearly $2.64 billion in potential airdrop gains from 2020 to 2024 due to geopolitical bans. The research showed how strict regulations and compliance barriers have prevented U.S. users from taking part in major token distributions, leaving them unable to benefit from free crypto windfalls. This regulatory lack of clarity not only affects individual traders financially, but even the U.S. government is missing out on roughly $525 million to $1.38 billion in tax revenue from geo-blocked airdrops. Not to forget the loss of corporate tax revenue from offshore migration. One such example is Tether, which reported a $6.2 billion profit in 2024, surpassing even BlackRock. If it was U.S.-based, this would generate an estimated $1.3 billion in federal corporate tax and $316 million in state taxes. The potential tax loss from Tether’s offshore status alone is roughly $1.6 billion annually. “The cumulative impact of multiple high-revenue crypto firms operating offshore represents a significant lost revenue source for the U.S. government,” DragonFly noted. After hitting a top early 2023, the asset went through some major moves with price consolidating within an upward-sloping channel. A potential accumulation around this level looks then likely for a breakout. The most recent chart shows that price is attempting to test the lower bounds of this channel where an opportunity for another comeback may arise, contingent upon strong participation by the bulls in the near term. Presently, the asset is sitting at the bottom of the channel, testing the area surrounding $145, an area that has been holding as support since mid-2023. If, on the other hand, price goes below that area, a further downtrend can be expected towards $125, which is a key support zone seen years before. A bounce off that lower trendline, however, would affirm the preceding upward trend as possible, especially with increasing buying volume in the coming weeks. Volume analysis suggests the market is in a standstill pattern. Volume flow has been declining over the past few months, implying indecision. Only a change in the market sentiment induced with substantial buying pressure would launch a rally. The price pattern and low volume render it highly vulnerable to fast moves in either direction. So investors should exercise caution and watch closely for signs of a volume spike that might indicate a change in market dynamics.
