The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)’s Crypto Task Force met with representatives from Robinhood Markets Inc. on Feb. 19 to discuss regulatory approaches for cryptocurrency. Executives from Robinhood, including General Counsel Lucas Moskowitz and Deputy General Counsel John Markle, participated in discussions covering special-purpose broker-dealers for crypto, staking, and the application of securities laws to tokenized assets. The meeting also addressed recent SEC enforcement actions and how new case law affects the classification of digital assets, including meme coins. The Crypto Task Force was established by SEC Acting Chair Mark Uyeda and is led by Commissioner Hester Peirce, who has been an advocate for clearer regulatory guidelines in the crypto industry. Robinhood submitted a letter to the SEC in response to its request for public input on the newly formed Crypto Task Force. While supporting the initiative, the company criticized the lack of clear regulatory guidelines in the U.S., arguing that the SEC’s current approach—determining securities status through litigation—is inefficient. Robinhood cited U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson’s remark that regulating crypto “case by case, coin by coin, court after court” risks inconsistent outcomes and confusion in the industry. The company also referenced previous congressional testimony, which outlined concerns over former SEC Chair Gary Gensler’s enforcement-driven regulatory strategy. Robinhood urged the SEC to use its existing authority under the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 to implement a provisional regulatory framework for digital assets, including registration requirements, record-keeping mandates, consumer protections, custody regulations, and transaction reporting. This meeting occurred days before Robinhood announced that the SEC had officially closed its investigation into Robinhood Crypto. The probe, part of the SEC’s broader scrutiny of digital asset platforms, examined whether Robinhood’s crypto offerings violated securities laws. The company welcomed the decision, reaffirming its commitment to compliance and efforts to help shape clear industry regulations. Libra, the cryptocurrency project made famous by the endorsement of Argentina’s President Javier Milei and its subsequent debacle, is reportedly the subject of an investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ). According to local media, people with knowledge of the issue confirmed that there is a probe in its early stages. The probe was started by the fraud section of the criminal division in the department, which is generally tasked with solving complex economic crimes involving U.S. entities abroad. La Nacion reports that the investigation follows an initial crime report that points to the involvement of President Javier Milei, mentioning Kelsier Ventures’ Hayden Adams, KIP Protocol’s Julian Peh, Mauricio Novelli, and Manuel Terrones Godoy as part of the Libra scheme. The probe might expand to include several agencies of the U.S. government, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which is already rumored to be already working on the issue, and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Libra, which is referred to by some erroneously as a meme coin, was first shared by Milei on social media as a token directed to help Argentine companies get funding. The endorsement prompted thousands to jump onto the token, losing millions after its price tumbled. Strive Asset Management CEO Matt Cole urged GameStop to adopt Bitcoin as a reserve asset, arguing that the move could redefine the company’s financial strategy. In a letter sent to GameStop Chairman and CEO Ryan Cohen on Feb. 24, Cole suggested that GameStop’s nearly $5 billion in cash reserves could be used to position the company as a leader in the gaming sector. “We believe GameStop has an incredible opportunity to transform its financial future by becoming the premier Bitcoin treasury company in the gaming sector,” Cole wrote. Strive, co-founded by Vivek Ramaswamy, manages exchange-traded funds that hold GameStop stock, giving the firm what Cole describes as a fiduciary responsibility and vested interest in the company’s success. While he did not disclose the amount of GameStop stock held, Strive maintains exposure through three different ETFs.
