US authorities have made significant progress in combating cryptocurrency-related crime by seizing approximately $31 million linked to the 2021 Uranium Finance hack. The announcement was made by the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in San Diego this week, nearly four years after the attack. Uranium Hack Seizure The hack, which occurred on April 28, 2021, exploited a critical vulnerability in Uranium Finance’s smart contracts during its transition to the V2.1 protocol. The flaw in its pair contracts allowed the attacker to withdraw nearly all available assets. This resulted in a theft of roughly $50 million in various cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Binance Coin (BNB), Binance USD (BUSD), Polkadot (DOT), Cardano (ADA), Tether (USDT), and Uranium’s native token, U92. Initially, suspicion surrounding the attack grew due to its timing, which occurred mere days after Uranium Finance launched its V2 upgrade. Adding to the controversy, the project’s contract repository was suddenly removed from GitHub, which led many in the community to speculate about potential insider involvement. Doubts about the platform’s security also intensified, especially since it had already experienced a $1.3 million breach earlier in the same month. The attacker quickly laundered the stolen funds with the help of controversial crypto mixer Tornado Cash, and AnySwap, a cross-chain bridge, to transfer assets across blockchains. Despite these obfuscation attempts, law enforcement managed to recover a significant portion of the stolen funds. Attacks on Crypto Platforms The latest seizure comes as cryptocurrency-related cybercrimes continue to rise, with a recent high-profile hack targeting Bybit which lost an estimated $1.4 billion in crypto assets. The FBI has officially attributed the heist to North Korea, further cementing the country’s role in global crypto theft. The Bank of Russia has delayed the full-scale rollout of its central bank digital currency (CBDC), the digital ruble, which was initially planned for this summer. Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina explained that the postponement would allow for additional testing and discussions with banks to refine the economic model. She was quoted by Tass as saying: We will shift to mass introduction of the digital ruble a bit later than initially planned, specifically – after all pilot phases are worked out and all consultations with banks on the economic model that is most beneficial for their clients are completed. “We will be able to give the new date of mass deployment later,” she noted. The initial plan was to introduce the digital ruble after July 1, 2025, but a new timeline has yet to be announced. As part of the ongoing pilot program, approximately 1,700 citizens and 30 businesses are currently using the digital ruble, with participation from 15 banks. Speaking at an annual meeting of the Association of Banks of Russia, Nabiullina described the project as successful while acknowledging concerns from stakeholders regarding necessary improvements. As discussions around crypto fraud intensify following the recent $1.5 billion Bybit hack, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is urging the industry to recognize another major risk. According to him, while much attention is given to preventing theft, not enough is done to protect people from accidental loss due to user errors. Accidental Crypto Loss Remains a Big Factor In a February 28 post on X, Buterin outlined several ways individuals lose large amounts of crypto, including software bugs, forgotten passwords, lost devices, accidental deletions, and failure to back up data when upgrading hardware. The 31-year-old explained that victims of such losses are often hesitant to speak out because there is no identifiable perpetrator to hold accountable. He emphasized the need for wallet security solutions that address all forms of loss, not just cyberattacks. To mitigate these risks, the Ethereum co-founder has long advocated for social recovery solutions as a more secure and user-friendly approach to regaining wallet access. Buterin’s approach to social recovery consists of both personal and automated components. He has suggested the use of a smart contract wallet where you can put arbitrary addresses as guardians with no expectation that those addresses use the same wallet. Social Recovery Solutions While some individuals have adopted more sophisticated security practices, risks like hardware destruction persist, requiring additional safety measures. Social recovery allows users to restore access without relying solely on seed phrases, which can be easily lost or forgotten. Instead, it involves a network of trusted individuals, known as “guardians,” who can assist in recovering access if the owner loses their private key. One example of social recovery in practice is Argent Wallet, which uses smart contracts to enable individuals to designate guardians for recovery purposes. Following Buterin’s latest comments, the Nani Wallet startup also highlighted its product as the first crypto-access wallet with full social recovery. The company claims that this feature allows users to recover lost accounts through trusted friends or backup devices while maintaining control of their original private key. The consequences of crypto loss can be severe, as shown by the well-known case of James Howells. In 2013, Howells’ hard drive, containing 8,000 Bitcoin (BTC) now worth hundreds of millions of pounds, was accidentally discarded by his ex-partner. The device is believed to be buried in a landfill owned by Newport City Council. To recover the lost BTC, the 39-year-old sued the council and assembled a team of experts willing to conduct a $13 million excavation at the site.
